Second Grade Curriculum
Students focus most of the second semester on receiving First Reconciliation, and First Communion. During the first semester they focus on helping others and loving others as ourselves.
Students use a technique called "The Daily 5." During "The Daily Five" I the teacher introduce a topic and teach a mini-lesson, this usually takes about 15 minutes, the rest of the time the students transition from station to station. The stations the students rotate in are "Read to Self, Read to Friend, Spelling, Word Work, and Writing."
Students have over 40 standards to master in second grade math! We work on things such as regrouping with adding and subtracting, adding three and four numbers at a time, counting by threes and fours, fractions, telling time to the minute, elapsed time, money, and towards the end of the year we introduce multiplication and division.
Students work on communities, American history, geography, and government. I teach social studies and Mrs. Gill teaches science. Last year we switched classes for these subjects and it seemed to work out well for the students and us.
Students use the "Handwriting Without Tears" curriculum. We work on certain way body posture, the correct way to hold a pencil, and of course the correct strokes for letters.
